December Hunting Report

A few days before Christmas we had our last trip of the year to the paradise of the North of Córdoba. The weather marked high temperatures and full sun so we had a cool box filled with drinks and ice and, just in case, we had two more cool boxes packed with ice for the whole day.

The group arrived as planned. They flew by LAN airline and the plane arrived on time. LAN has a very good service and flies to Córdoba through the city of Lima in Peru. This is a very pleasant flight as regards comfort on the plane and food service, but it is not as convenient regarding schedule, since it lands at international airport Pajas Blancas in the city of Córdoba a little bit after 5:30 am. Our assistants helped our guests so as all suitcase pick up and paperwork were agile because that early in the morning and after waiting for a few flights, having everything ready fast is the best Christmas present.

The drive to the Lodge was very nice since at dawn on a December 20th there was nobody on the roads. During the trip we told our guests about the attributes of the Lodge and the details of the hunt, and we talked about our country and the locals. For Tim it was the first time and he was very curious about all of it.

When we arrived to the Lodge, we were welcomed at the front door with a glass of cold freshly squeezed orange juice and then we enjoyed a typical American breakfast inside. At that time the temperature was around 80F, and we placed the group of hunters in comfortable and nice suite bedrooms. We also offered them a wide variety of Beretta and Benelli semi-automatic and over-and-under shotguns and two brands of cartridge, a national brand and the imported Fiocchi. The most wanted gun was the semi-automatic Beretta 391, caliber 20 gauge.

All set and with lots of energy to start having fun we departed towards the field at around 9 am. In this period of the year days are longer and the time doves fly is larger. After a 20 minute drive, we arrived at a mountainous region, with short bushes and ancient carob trees where our team was waiting for us with the camp ready to start our shooting day.

Already in the field, our Chef Guy (Gallo) and the field assistants received us and took us to the shooting spot, which had good shade areas and great shooting angles. Thousands of doves were flying almost all day long.  We started seeing birds at 6:30 am with sunrise and as we approached mid morning, around 10:15 am, the flow increased. Doves look for water in creeks as temperature reached 100F on average and they get their food in nearby feed lots or corn stubble fields. Besides, doves had laid eggs and that is another reason why we saw them flying around all day long.

At 1:30 pm, our cook announced lunch was ready; he was waiting for us with an excellent Argentine “picada” with salami, cheese, olives and great malbec wine followed by a fantastic  Argentine “asado” that included different meat cuts such as loin, sausages, pork loin, beef, ribs, etc.

Truth is our guests loved all about lunch, but the “pork loin” which was grilled with a special mustard sauce was preferred over the other meat cuts.

After lunch, our guests rested in comfortable hammocks and then we went back to the blinds to shoot the great number of doves that were going back to the roost. Our friend Tim shot above average and he ended shooting 800 bullets in one afternoon “Great day Mr. Tim!”

Happy but tired after the trip and the hunt, we opened the cool box filled with ice, put some in a glass, added gin, a slice of lemon and completed with tonic water. It was sunset and we were ready to go back to the Lodge. A soothing bath and a nice dinner were the perfect closure for a hunting day with an excellent amount of doves and great shooting.

On the last day, we opened bottles of champagne and toasted for a successful last December hunt, the coming Christmas and an excellent trip that exceeded all expectations and where everybody was eager to come back.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We hope to see you all this 2014.
