NEWS & REPORTS
A Thousand Doves Team
When the alarm on my phone goes off, I know it’s time to start another hunting day. It’s 7am, as soon as I check outside through my window I can tell we’re going to have an amazing day in the field. It's warm, February is summer in Argentina and days are long and let us enjoy a great hunting.
Our guests are staying in Plaza Real Lodge. Plaza Real is one of the best options for dove hunting in Argentina. It is located in the province of Cordoba, in the center of Argentina, 50 miles (100 km) north of Cordoba’s International Airport. The driving time from the airport to the lodge is one hour. This totally renovated and stylish hotel surrounded by farmland provides excellent and new accommodations to make your trip special.
When I get to the hotel I find our friends Michael, Cody, Chris and Ken enjoying a nice breakfast in Plaza Real Lodge. After I brief them about the day we have ahead we’re good to go. We always remind our guests to bring some insect repelent, shooting gloves, sunglasses, and sunscreen lotion. These last two are a must at this time of year! Check our webpage for more information about gear and equipment!
At about 8.30 we head to the fields. It’s just a 40 minute drive in our comfortable Mercedes Benz van. All the rest of the equipment is packed too - guns, shells, camping set, all good for another great day!
As soon as we arrive at the field we start seeing the first birds leaving their roosts towards the areas of water and food. There’s no time to waste! Our field assistants are ready and set in their spots and after 10 minutes our friends are in their hunting spots. We make sure they’re all comfortable in there and they say yes. They also mention how satisfied they are with the guns and shells. Our friends this time are using the Benelli Montefeltro guns, cal 20. This is thanks to our field assistants, too. Fran, Majadilla, Guille and Hector are a good field team, very professional in what they do.
Some hours later I welcome the first hunter in the lunch area we have put up to feed our friends. Federico, our star chef, is ready to welcome him with some Malbec wine and appetizers, some dove cooked in red wine with our traditional sauce Chimichurri, also known as chimichanga. A mix of bell peppers, onions, parsley, oil and vinegar among other ingredients.
It’s not long till the rest of the group comes to the lunch area. Our friends Michael, Cody, Ken and Chris are ready to devour a delicious lunch. For starters we have some more dove rolled in bacon, onion and bell peppers. The main course is the staple food of this country: meat, the world wide famous Argentinean steak. But the famous asado, grilled meat, is not just steak. We go big when it comes to asado and include different types of meat cuts such as pork and short ribs, pork belly, blood sausage, regular sausages, chicken and flank steak to mention some. All these grilled with local wood from the typical trees of this area of the country, such as algarrobos and quebrachos blancos. A short nap is in order after so much meat and the best Malbec wine!
At about 2.3 we see the first flight of birds in the afternoon which means it’s time to get back! Our field assistants have already cleaned the guns and are back in the hunting spots waiting to assist our guests in the shooting.
When we get the first call in our radios is 5.45 and the field assistants let us know that most of our guests are done for the day. Now it’s time to relax, I drive around the hunting spots picking up the hunters and I have the beers ready to celebrate what a good day it was. When we meet them, they are extremely happy, the four of them shot down more than a thousand birds! Welcome to the 1000 club! we give them the 1000 doves shirt to show off among their friends back at home! Our friends have asked for massages. They are booked and the massage therapists will be waiting for them as soon as we get back to the lodge.
When we get to Plaza Real Lodge we see Cici, she is our host for the day and is waiting for Michael, Cody, Ken and Chris. There are good drinks waiting for them and a nice shower before the massage.
It was a wonderful day, I say goodbye to our friends and start getting ready for the next hunting day! February is a busy time of year but we enjoy meeting our guests and providing them with the best experience possible.
Come and see it for yourself, you should be the next one!
