Nothing but Celebration - Part II
Brad Meyer’s group arrived a Monday at 8.30 am to Cordoba’s airport where David was waiting to take them straight to the field. That morning the highway was quiet because it was a holiday in Argentina for San Martin death’s anniversary.
... After a while, I said goodbye to Roy and Tata and went against all previous positions in order to go where James and Hector were, the only place that was on the left, just about 5 yards off the main road (of course narrow dirt road in the middle of the mountains).
The last day James told me that this was the place he enjoyed the most. I think it was the feeling of seeing, for the first time, such a large number of doves and, at the same time, having a shotgun in his hand. We must also say that the view and the landscapes were simply amazing. You could see from the top of the mountain lot of harvested fields giving a great variation of colors, the path in the middle where you could barely see the movement of trucks as a small point, and, on the horizon the mountains, a beautiful sunset seemed to be expected behind them.
The second day we repeated the same schedule to get to the field at noon to have for lunch pork sausage, chicken, beef and vegetable stir fry with pigeon and some wine. Steve took a break in the hammock, while the rest of the group made desktop until David gave us the green light to begin hunting in the afternoon. First, the guys would go uphill with shotguns, cartridges and coolers with drinks and we would reach them 5 minutes later in the Van and, as we were watching the guys standing alongside the road, we were leaving their hunters.
On that afternoon, they hunted in larger places, armed for 2 hunters each as the customers requested. Roy, along with Brad, hunted on the highest part of the mountain. That afternoon Brad achieved very good numbers, even shooting several very long shots. Below were Shane & Ricky and roadside some 20yds were James & Steve. It was a very nice evening, just windy but clear with a temperature that was about 20 degrees, a bit cool in the shade but very nice in the sunlight. That afternoon Roy and Steve would take massages at Plaza Real Lodge, like the day before and the day that follows.
The last day Brad and the others decided it would be good to leave in the morning and spend all day at the field. And so it was that, after a great breakfast we left to another hill, around 8:35 am. This hill is not as high as the ones from the past 2 days, but that does not matter when hunting, as the pigeon would fly the same manner as the previous days. The morning was fine, as we know, mornings are never as amazing as afternoons. Now I am sitting in the van writing these lines, hoping that David calls us to lunch, while others are enjoying fresh drinks and I can hear behind their voices and laughter to Eric Clapton, giving a unique atmosphere to noon pure sunshine, fresh air and good friends.
I return to these lines with a group ready to climb into the van and begin the first part of his trip back home. Luckily, the door was slightly open, so I left without Roy realizes and continued his nap about 15 minutes until David, after a small grin head, hinted me that the entrance of sautéed pigeon with vegetables was ready, a dish that everyone loved and which Brad asked David that same morning, very early, very gently, if we could repeat that it.
What followed that sautéed pigeon, had the usual lunch that our guests love so much. This time there was no time for a nap or a short break in the hammock. In fact, we remove them immediately after eating the main dishes and dessert, explaining that the pigeon had already begun to fly about 25 minutes earlier than usual.
That evening was really amazing, Ricky "The Lucky Man" earned more than 500 pigeons in 3hrs. That afternoon he shared the podium with Brad, while Shane would do it with James, and Steve with Roy.
Once we finished, we went down to the camp and stayed for a longer time than usual because the afternoon was very nice, windless and their last evening in Argentina. I let them enjoy themselves for a while and went with the guys who were about 25 yards away.
Our new friends, about 45 minutes later, with the sun almost behind the mountains, woke up from the table and one by one went looking for his field assistant to leave the appropriate tip and thus take the last lap to hotel, but not before without saying goodbye to all the guys and thanking them for the great time they had spent and how comfortable they felt with them.
So that was then, our last night. We had our dinner and, few minutes later, they got into the van to leave southern direction, straight to the airport.
I will get my things and go to work at the office, after spending a great experience with a new group.
See you in Dallas my friends!
