Dove hunting Report - A New Day

I’ve just parked the truck at the door of the lodge, and being 7 in the morning, my phone says it’s time to start a new day. The outside temperature is very warm, we are expecting a maximum of 30° C, which is about 90° F and predicts a great day. All our guests already have their breakfast at the lounge, and after a word about the program, we are ready to go to the field.

The “safety speech” is essential and one of the most important things I have to as a guide. The first day of every group I take care of remembering the key points on this issue; like not to fire low shots under 45°; always carry the shotgun open and make sure that it is discharged every time a client leaves it, hand it over to an assistant or put it away in the soft case. For our company, safety is of such importance that we have copied on our website the security rules for access for all our clients.

Around 8:30, we are ready and start the trip to the field, which in this occasion will take us about 20 minutes. Once we are there, “Gallo Suarez” is waiting for us along with all the filed assistants, shotguns, cartridges, camping equipment, set positions and everything ready for another day of dove hunting. Today we are headed to “Las Sierras de Macha”.

As soon as we get there, all the field assistants have their flashlights on, greet by name their clients and after a couple of jokes to break the ice, everyone goes to his shooting position. The field begins to fill with doves and in seconds I hear the first shot followed by a shout of “good shot Sir”. Now it’s time to check that every hunting position is working properly; if one of them is not having enough doves, we set another position in a better location. The “Beretta Úrika 2” shotguns and the “Fiocchi” cartridges work very well; our guests are very satisfied with both and luckily, there were only a couple of jams with one shotgun that was solved with some oil.

Hours later I welcome the first shooter at the food tent, ready to have a glass of wine and a special appetizer. You have to come and see the imposing of our appetizers. I find it hard to tell in words and besides, I like the idea of letting curiosity so you can visit our gallery section on our website.

When all our guest are at the table, we start lunch with some fresh doves rolled in bacon, onion and peppers; then we have ribs, pork plank and other cuts all cooked on the grill with natural wood of the area. And of course, we have Malbec Argentinian wine, which will be followed by a short “siesta”.

In the afternoon, around 2:30 we have our first flight of doves, which means that it’s time for fun. With every shotgun clean and the positions set, our field assistants lead their clients to the shooting area. Around 5:45 we receive the first radio call that some hunters have finished.

After picking up every hunter with our truck, we are ready to return to the lodge and have a round of beer. With such a busy day, my friends ask for a massage.

Once our guests are safe on the hands of our staff and our chef, I say goodbye to everyone and leave the lodge to prepare everything for a new day.

I hope this has given you an idea of a typical hunting day in Cordoba and I really wish these words push you to come and visit us; and like Pablo always says “you should be the next one”!
