It Sounded Like War in the Fields

David & Terry arrived at San Javier Lodge at 12am after being 2 days in Buenos Aires city. I showed them the Lodge and after a pleasant lunch they had a short rest before going on their first hunt, which it was at 16hs. Time arrived and we gave the guys a wader each.

After a hot black coffe Francisco took them to the fields for theirs first duck hunting of the trip. They went very close to San Javier Lodge and about 50 minutes later they came back with their limits done. We waited for them outside next to a grill where we have a bar table where we usually wait our hunters on their way back with a big fire, a nice appetizer and some drinks before having dinner. After some drinks and a nice talk with the guys they told me how their hunting was, how nice their field assistant treated them, how they missed some really easy shoots, the great ones they did, how some of the ducks went straight down after hitting them while others flew away a long distance before going down. After all this nice talk Terry and Dave went to take a shower and get ready for dinner.

On the following day we woke them up at 5am so they could have breakfast by 5:30hs and be ready by 6am to leave the lodge for a new duck hunt. The table was set up for 5 guys that lunch since we were having three new guests. The thing was that that morning was really foggy so the guys ended up arriving to the Lodge by 5pm. So it was only the three of us for lunch. After lunch David took a short nap while Terry rested at the living room where the fire was still on when they came back. Terry doesn’t like to take naps. He says he gets up more tired than when he goes to bed. By 16hs they went hunting again while I stayed at the lodge waiting for Jeff, Brad & Brian who finally arrived by 17hs and after a very quick introduction and time only for a fast pee, they went hunting walking like about 500 yards from the Lodge.

Even though they went one hour later to the field the guys did a great job and they came back before sunset with all the limits in their pockets. We had some drinks and lots of fun close to the fire in the outside bar table and like about 40 minutes later Terry & Dave joined us. They introduced each other to the guys and we had a blast the six of us. One more time Pieri, our chef, did an excellent work and our guest were really happy and surprised about what they had just had. Honestly I cant remember what was for dinner but I do remember what we had for dessert. I can’t take out of my memories Dave’s happy face while eating his Dulce de Leche crepe. This was Dave’s third time in Argentina and he became a big dulce de leche fan.

On the following day our friends from Texas went for Ducks in the morning (they left the Lodge by 6:15am) While Terry & Dave, both from Massachusetts, decided to go fishing. Despite not being a very promising day (it was as cloudy as windy), the guys did one of the best fishing of the season, catching a really nice & big golden dorado. Of course you can get bigger than the one the guys caught but you should go fishing in our summer time, and the problem with the summer is that you don’t have ducks LOL. Anyway, going back to our friend’s dorado I would say it was a 4 or 5 pounds’ fish. Of course they also got some piranhas and on their second fishing day Terry caught 2 cat fish (first I saw in all season round). In the afternoon everybody went duck hunting and again we all meet again outside at the bar table next to a big fire. Everybody was getting some massages that afternoon/night.

We were in the middle of the trip by now and the guys decided they wanted to do Perdiz at least one day. So with Francisco we decided to take them to a very good field we have for perdiz where we also have the possibility to do great doves in the afternoon. So we left by 8am from the Lodge and arrived to the field by 9:10 am. We told the guys is an hour drive but what we do in cases like these, we go all day to the field and do a nice camp for lunch so we can stay all day outside with no need to go back to the lodge.

When we do duck hunting we usually don’t go further than 15 minutes from the lodges. I will say in average the fields are 10 minutes from the Lodge. We also have perdiz and doves 20 minutes form the Lodge but some times we like to go to this field we went an hour away from the Lodge and stay all day in the fields. Even though they couldn’t make their limits that morning Terry told me they saw a great number of perdices. Dave said something like: “If we were better shooters we would definetly be able to did our limit”. I saw him shooting doves that afternoon and he was shooting very good. I think it was because they are not very much used to this kind of bird and sometimes when they fly very low they didn’t shoot them because they didn’t want to hit the dog.

The guys walked like two and a half hours that morning and by 13hs we were all together at the camp ready for a great lunch. Francisco prepared for us tenderloin steak, chicken and pork with salad. Brownie for dessert and after a very short nap who Brad only took, it was time for dove shooting. The doves were already flying by 14pm so Francisco told me it was better to get moving.  It was a great afternoon, it sounded like war out there and the guys did great numbers. From 200 hundred the less one to 607 hundred for Brian. I was in the blind with him for like about 40 minutes and he was on fire!

Sun was hiding in the horizon by the time we were all ready to go back to San Javier Lodge. We said bye to the field assistant guys, we thank them for everything, took like about 16 perdices for our chef at the lodge and went back to the route. We were all as happy as tired, it was a great but a long day so that night as soon dinner was done, after one or two drinks, we all went to our rooms and had a good  nigh sleep.

Next morning Jeff, Brad and Brian went duck hunting to the marshes. While Terry and Dave went perdiz hunting all day long. The afternoon was as way better than the morning the guys told me they saw like about 25-30 perdices flying that afternoon. On the following day Terry and Dave went fishing in the morning and hunting in the afternoon while the Texan guys went hunting in the morning and stayed at the lodge after lunch. By 15hs they took a massage and when the other guys went back from hunting by about 19hs we joined them with some appetizers and then by dinner we all made a final toast thanking for the great days we all had.  We gave Pieri a big applause on the last dinner, had a few more drinks and went to bed since we were going to wake them up at 5am so we were able to leave by 6:00 and get to the airport by 8:15. The flight from Parana to Buenos Aires in the morning is at 10:20am. We did the check in I took the guys to the coffee store, invited them some empanadas and coke and stayed with them for like about 15 more minutes until I told them I should be leaving; I still had four more hours driving to Buenos Aires and Francisco needed to go back and set everything up  so he could take back a bunch of things to Cordoba and get ready for our next group who were arriving in four days.

I had a big hug with all the guys and told Brian I will see them back in Dallas in January in the Dallas Safari Club. Dave is not gonna be able to come to the convention, but not because Massachusetts is far away. Because he is going to be celebrating his 40th birthday in Hong Kong!! Dave was born in January 1st . I’m already missing these guys.
